JAIME HERNANDEZ & THE FANTASTIC FOUR

Crud! Its been way too long so Im just going to post some stuff from my freekydeeky collection.
I love Jack Kirby's run on the Fantastic Four (he was the artist for the first 100 issues!). Pure escapism for my money. So when I met Jaime Hernandez (Wha? where is this story leading too?)at one of those many cons I have been to, I thought I would ask for a sketch (as well as buy some art) based on those great times. I have almost every issue of the original Love & Rockets, love Jaime's stylized women, and one of my favorite FF characters was Medusa so..........
Thanks Jaime!
Marvel, get a clue, and beg him to do one issue of the FF.

Nouvelle Vague

A few nights ago I saw an amazing new band from France called Nouvelle Vague.
The songs are from our New Wave past, low-fi'd for the lounge crew. Great versions of The Clash's "Guns of Brixton" , Sisters of Mercy "Marian" and XTC's "Making Plans for Nigel". After their set was over they came back and played a wicked version of an errie Bauhaus tune. And during "Too Drunk To Fuck" the two singers ran off the stage and jumped on the bar encouraging us to sing along. A few French friends of mine who now live here were there to cheer them on.
There are so few bands or events that have any style any more so its very important to support them whenever they are in town. Try to see this great group!

John Byrne Captain Canuck

Byrne Captain Canuck

Please be kind, I am baring all. Ha! When I was 15 years old (the biggest geek you would ever meet) I met artist John Byrne at a local con. This was just when he finished his amazing kick ass run of the X-Men and I was a HUGE fan of his and would look for any book drawn by him. He was drawing sketches ($20!) so instead of asking for a voluptuous Red Sonja or a sexy Black Widow I asked for the Captain. Whaaa? When he was finished he presented me with a beautiful sketch.I was blown away. My first real piece of art! I had it matted and it hung on my wall. In my twenties I stopped reading comics and got into music and other art and it wasnt until recently that I pulled it out of a stack of art I have and really gave it a new look. Its still great. Im still blown away by it.

WALLY WOOD

Back when I was around 13 years old one of the first comic book artists I ever found out about was Wally Wood. He was primarily known for his work at EC comics from the 50's like Weird Science,Weird Fantasy and early Mad magazine but he also did some cool work for Marvel and Warren. In the 70's he started to self publish with titles like Cannon and Sally Forth. What I really liked were all the details in his work (interiors of space ships!) and the double-lighting effects that he would create on his figures. Very dramatic. Of course my favorite were the 5'2'' women he would draw. They were so cute! Wally Wood took his own life in 1981 but there is so much incredible work he left behind that he is still an influential artist. He is on my top five comic artist list. Check him out.

Birthday Candle

Birthday Candle

I just had a great Birthday party at one of my favorite clubs that my babe Bats threw for me. A lot of my friends were actually around town that week to attend and even a few surprise ( how did she hook that up?) old friends showed up.
The best was the three tiered cup cake tower that held four dozen little cakes.
After two chocolate cakes (the vodka kind), three keylime pies, cosmos, metros, someone always handing me a beer to keep my two other beers company, and way too many tequilas, I had the worst hangover the next day in many years to remember.
Thanks also to four of my best friends who all went in and got me a retro old school Powell skateboard! WOW!
That was really generous. Its arriving next week, and photos of me performing "Ollies" at the nearby bowl will be posted very soon.
Thanks to everyone who attended.

And thank you Bats. That was very special.

Phantom Lady #17 with the classic Matt Baker cover art. A few years ago actor Nicolas Cage sold his collection of 400 rare comic books for $1.6 million dollars. This is one his books. Cage took his name after the 1972 Marvel hero Luke Cage, aka Power Man. This was also in the 1954 book Seduction of the Innocent. Because of that, #17 is highly collected for its "Headlights" cover.

SugarBooger Kevin Scalzo & Blood Mark Ryden

Speaking of influences. The super hot (yeah, he's hot!) Mark Ryden is a big fan of artist Kevin Scalzo and his character Sugar Booger. A huge hit in Japan I heard. Scalzo's work is a fantastic mix of 70's House of Marvel, Micronauts,Lonnie Toft,Chaïm Soutine and extra chunky peanut butter. Rydens latest portfolio and prints were called Blood Sweat & Tears and featured one print called Blood that was influenced by Sugar Booger. Check out Kevin's work. Some of you might remember him from the Burning Brush auctions put together by Tim Biskup. Man, a lot of those artists are really big now.

I have been saying this for a long time that while Juxtapoz is an awesome mag that has shown a lot of people the new lo-fi (thaz my term suckah!) art, new artists have to look beyond those ten stars that are shown in every issue.
You love Robert Williams, Tim Biskup, Coop, Shag, Glenn Barr? Well, look at Wally Wood or Harvey Kurtzman (those Little Annie Fannys, WOW!). Bill Wray, Jim Flora, Bill Ward or even Bruce Timm.
Or even go back a little further and learn about the Italian Futurists or the German Expressionists Max
Beckmann, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Looking at last months issue does not work any more folks. That also goes for all of the new galleries that just copy the mag for next years line up.
